Walnut Chandelier
This Chandelier was made from a live edge slab of Eastern Walnut. The slab came from a local farmers land after it came down in a storm. I bought it not really having a plan, it wasn't very clear what it was going to look like, the mill marks really hid its character.
After the first pass with my jack plane it became clear it was going to be a beautiful piece of wood, and it is an amazing piece of walnut. It ranges all over the color scale with a bits of red and purple swirling amongst the traditional dark colors. It’s nearly 3 inches thick heavy and dense weighting in about just under 50 lbs.
I bought a chandelier from the big box store, which I harvested the wiring and glass from. I attached a plate to the top of the slab to work as a wiring harness. To mount it I used a set of ‘porch swing’ hooks screwed into the ceiling joist. I made a couple walnut face plates almost like an escutcheon to hide the hooks on the ceiling. And of course I’m using Edison bulbs which have a very warm glow and work magnificently with the Walnut.
